Why Showing Your Face Online Builds Trust in Your Business.

Many business owners feel hesitant about showing their face online. They worry about looking self-promotional or “full of themselves,” even though they know visibility is important for growing their business. But the truth is, showing up consistently in your brand photos, social media, and online presence is one of the most powerful ways to build trust with potential clients. Recently, I experienced a moment that reminded me exactly why visibility matters so much.

Recently I went to an event where I didn’t know a single person.

Nearly 200 women were attending, and as I walked in I could feel the nerves creeping in. You know that feeling when you scan a room hoping to spot a familiar face… and there isn’t one?
That was me.

But something unexpected started happening.
Women began coming up to me and saying, “Hi Tabitha.”

At first I assumed I must have met them somewhere before and just couldn’t remember. But as we talked, I realised something surprising.
They recognised me.

From LinkedIn.
From Instagram.
From my photos.
From seeing me show up online.

One woman even laughed as we were leaving and said, “You’re famous.”
(I promise you I’m not famous!)
But it did make me pause and think.

Of course I didn’t simply stand there waiting for people to come up to me - I pulled on my Brave Gal Pants and introduced myself to a lot of friendly faces that day.
But those women who recognised me and said “Hi”?
That day I observed something really important about visibility.

Familiarity changes everything

Those women didn’t feel like they were introducing themselves to a complete stranger.
They already felt a level of familiarity with me.

They’d seen my face before.
They’d seen my work.
Some of them even mentioned things I’d shared about renovating my apartment.

This! This makes complete sense why showing up visually in your business matters so much.

When people see you consistently over time, you stop feeling like a stranger.

They start to recognise you.
They start to remember you.
And that familiarity makes conversations easier.

The hesitation so many business owners feel

Here’s the interesting part though.
So many business owners tell me something very similar when we start talking about brand photography or showing up online.

They say:
“I know I should be more visible… but I don’t want to look full of myself.”

And I understand that feeling completely.
Putting your face out there can feel uncomfortable.
It can feel like you’re drawing attention to yourself in a way that doesn’t sit naturally.

So people hold back.

They post less.
They avoid photos of themselves.
They stay safely behind their work, their logo, or their product.
Or fake AI not-really-them slop images.

But here’s the thing…

Being seen isn’t vanity

The women who recognised me at that event didn’t think I was full of myself.
They simply felt like they already knew me.

Seeing someone regularly - in photos, videos, or stories - builds familiarity. And familiarity is one of the first steps toward trust.

Visibility isn’t about ego.
It’s about connection.
It gives people the chance to recognise you, remember you, and feel comfortable approaching you when they’re ready.

And that moment when someone walks up and says “Hi Tabitha” even though you’ve never met before?
That’s visibility quietly doing its job.

Why this matters for your business

People are far more likely to trust someone who feels familiar to them.

When your audience sees you consistently showing up - whether that’s through brand photos, videos, or simply sharing a little of your story - they begin to feel more connected to you and your work.

Not because you’re trying to be famous.

But because they’ve had the chance to see the human behind the business.
And that small shift can completely change how people respond when they finally meet you in person or reach out to work with you.

If showing up still feels uncomfortable

If the idea of posting photos or video of yourself still makes you hesitate, you’re not alone.
Almost every business owner goes through that stage.

But it might help to reframe what visibility really is.

First up, it’s not about showing off.
It’s about making it easier for the people who need what you offer to recognise you, trust you, and feel confident starting a conversation.
Because people can’t build trust with someone they never see.

And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your business is simply let people see you.

If this is something you’ve been navigating in your own business, you’re not alone.

Helping business owners feel comfortable being visible is a big part of the work I do as a brand photographer.

If you’d like to explore what that could look like for you, you’re always welcome to get in touch.
